As a child, LaTisha Marie Cotto used to sit on the swing set in the backyard of her grandparents home in Waco, Texas and sing heartfelt songs of her own invention. Singing helped me to escape the reality of being an only child in a single parent Mexican American home. My songs empowered me and I no longer saw limits to my future, explains the modern day musical phenomenon now professionally known as L.A.T.I.
Her bi-cultural reality aided in the development of her musical prowess. My home was the foundation of my musical upbringing. My mom played everything from Madonna to The Commodores to Grupo Mazz. Influenced by both the growing popularity of hip-hop/R&B in the late 80s/early 90s and the presence of Tejano music in her home state, L.A.T.I. discovered her destiny in 1995 upon the untimely passing of her musical idol, Selena. I knew then that I wanted to inspire my fans the way she inspired me and still inspires me to this day. Thats how you know you have made an impact when your music speaks to people on a personal level.
Eventually relocating from Waco to Atlanta, L.A.T.I.s sound evolved, soaking up the musical richness of the Southern Capital of Crunk. My years in Atlanta opened up a world of opportunities, both on a musical and personal level. I saw a world outside of my own little backyard in Waco and the bar was raised higher. In 2005, she relocated to the Sunshine State, where the cultural melting pot struck home with her own dual reality. Music here in Miami is so rich and diverse that my lyrical game is going to the next level.
L.A.T.I. has worked with artists such as Xtreme (on their smash hit, Honey, I Do), DLG (Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti Remix) and Jimmy Flavorr (She So Hot). Her first single, Spaceship, off of her debut album, OVERLOAD, is featured on the seasons hottest Latin Urban compilation, Hot Latin Fire Vol I, alongside such artists as Aventura, Pitbull, India. Its a great honor for me to be included on a compilation with such heavyhitters. I am grateful that Top Stop Music believes in my talent enough to include me on such an important album.
Combining her trademark slapstick delivery with infectious beats, L.A.T.I. breaks the mold with her playful, thought provoking lyrical creations unforeseen in a female that finds herself in a genre dominated by men. Adding to her artistic armory is the fact that she both sings and raps. It is important for me that my music represent who I am as a person a fusion of cultures, realities and rhythms, she affirms. Indeed, L.A.T.I. is on a mission to fulfill her destiny on her own terms.
